In awe of new 9/11 tower collapse photos

33297870I’m probably not the first and I certainly won’t be the last to comment on these photos, but goddamn: I’m blown away.

ABC News filed freedom of information act requests to secure release of images taken by a New York City police department helicopter on the morning of 9/11. Capturing the towers before, during and after their collapse, the photographs give a never-before-seen perspective on a pivotal moment in modern history.

It’s absolutely chilling to see the bright red flames in the still-standing tower. It’s just as eerie to see the quiet, perfectly crisp edges of the dust cloud as it envelops lower Manhattan. (See a slideshow here.)

I don’t know if I’ve been so affected by a set of images. More than my breath being taken away the first time I saw the lurid Abu Ghraib prisoner photos or the queasy surreality of Saddam Hussein caught wide-eyed in his bunker, these copter shots of the World Trade Center towers show a moment with which we are all — the whole world — all too familiar. Santa, Glenn Beck, and David Brooks? They're all dicks

Original Bad Santa flipping the bird

Santa? He

An elite instructor of military cadets here in Riyadh forwarded me a question. Is Wikipedia a reasonable source for college students?

No, the teacher reasoned, but perhaps Dickipedia is.

Behold a selection of the website’s very important knowledge:

1. Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, and Santa) is a historical, legendary and mythical figure and a dick.

2. Glenn Beck (born February 10, 1964) is a right-wing American talk show host and a dick.

3. David Brooks (b. August 11, 1961) is a columnist for The New York Times, a commentator on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and a dick.

Among other notable dicks are Tom Brady, Muqtada al-Sadr, and The Pilgrims.

More entertainment? Don’t miss Photos of TV, by Mike Sacks.

Maybe you’ve seen one or both, but they represent two ends of the internet spectrum: Cruel and hilarious versus subtle and moving. Both are valuable, I suppose. Read the rest of this entry »

Photos: Follow an American soldier for 27 very real months

Dec. 2, 2008. 9:19 a.m. Iraqis stand in frustration as Ian and Sgt. Buthmann explain why a road is blocked: A vehicle was overturned, and the path needs to be clear for it to be flipped. (Courtesy Blogs.Denverpost.com)

Ian Fisher, barely 18 years old, grants access to Denver Post reporters and photographers, who follow him for the next two and plus years. Over dozens and dozens of images, we see Fisher:

* On his graduation day
* Nursing a wounded elbow on the second day of basic training
* Smoking cigarettes and going AWOL
* Pumping iron at the gym in Iraq
* Getting bigger and older
* Ripping up a picture of his girlfriend

Take a minute to scroll through the months. I guarantee you’ll come away from the experience a little shaken. It’s an all-volunteer Army — and it’s the only one we’ve got.
